For all us book-lovers out there, sometimes we can have far too many books, and sometimes they can take over our lives a little bit. With just piles and piles of books everywhere, and we just don’t know how to organize them! It can become kind of a mess! Unfortunately, that will just not do, and we have to do something. But where do we even start? Here are four suggestions on how to organize your bookshelves so that you can find everything again.
1) Like a Library
Public libraries (in English-speaking countries) use the Dewey Decimal System. This system is especially useful if you have a lot of non-fiction. If you’re a purely fictional reader, it may not help you as much. If you want to organize your home library this way, this is what you’ll need to do.
Organize your books into sections by subject matter (I.E. Computers; Philosophy; Relgion; Literature; Etc.). From there, you would want to organize your books by an author’s last name in alphabetical order. That’s really it.
2) By Author Last Name

Don’t have enough different genres to justify doing the Dewey Decimal System? That’s okay. You can just organize your books by the author’s last name, and see if that works for you. Now you’ll have everything alphabetized, and hopefully have a much easier time finding your books! (Unless you remember the title of the book, but not the author, whoops.)
3) Color Coordinate

If you so please, you can make your home library into a rainbow of colors. From white, to red, to orange, to yellow, to green, than indigo (or your blue-ish books), to violet. Your space will stand out, and if you can remember what colors your favorite books are, it may be easier to remember where they’re placed in your shelves.
4) By Fictional Genre

But what if you just read fiction? How about organizing your books by genre? Young Adult books go one place, Contemporary Adult goes close by, Science Fiction goes another place, Historical Fiction is on the top shelf, and whatever else you may have, too.
Hopefully, one way or another, we’ll all get our bookshelves in order. I know mine needs an update.
